Becoming a Relativity Master takes dedication, curiosity, and a drive to keep learning. In this blog, Jason Haag, Avalon’s Operations Support Specialist, talks about what this achievement means to him, how it reflects his commitment to excellence in eDiscovery, and how it benefits our clients every day.

What was your certification path?

My journey toward becoming a Relativity Master began in 2012 with the Relativity Certified Administrator (RCA) exam on Relativity Server 7.2. From there, I steadily expanded my expertise, earning the Analytics Specialist certification in 2021, followed by the Processing Specialist, Project Management Specialist, and Review Management Specialist certifications in 2024.

When did you complete the certification? How long did it take you?

The full path spanned more than 12 years, reflecting both the evolution of Relativity from an on-premises server-based solution to a cloud-based SaaS solution and my own professional growth. Once I committed to achieving the Relativity Master designation, however, I completed the final three certifications in just seven months – demonstrating both focus and the ability to quickly master complex subject matter.

What does it mean to you to be a Relativity Master?

Earning the Relativity Master designation validates the depth of knowledge I’ve developed since first working with Relativity in 2009. It represents not only technical expertise but also a commitment to applying best practices, driving efficiency, and ensuring defensibility in every project. It’s a milestone that reflects both experience and dedication to excellence.

What’s next for your Relativity “education”?

I’m eager to continue expanding my expertise as Relativity evolves. In particular, I’m looking forward to the introduction of new Specialist certifications around the aiR line of AI-powered products. These innovations have the potential to transform workflows, and I’m excited to be among the first to integrate them into client solutions.

What does your advanced Relativity knowledge allow us to do for clients? How does it benefit them?

My Relativity knowledge allows me to design and execute workflows that are both efficient and defensible. I can help anticipate potential challenges in processing, review, and analytics, and apply best practices to minimize risk while maximizing efficiency.

For clients, this translates into faster turnaround times, more accurate results, and cost savings throughout the discovery process. It also means I can assist our team in tailoring solutions to the unique needs of each matter – whether that’s leveraging analytics to reduce review volumes, structuring processing to avoid downstream issues, or ensuring compliance with ethical and legal standards. Ultimately, my expertise helps clients gain confidence that their data is being handled with precision, security, and strategic foresight.
